Proven power at Japspeed

These days everyone wants to see power graphs, so we are giving the public what they want and deserve; some proven power results from the new Honda Civic Type R FN2 air filter kit!
The basic fundamentals of engine tuning will always be- get the air in and out as quickly and smoothly as you can. The starting point in tuning is often, the air filter. Some manufactures actively engineer restrictions into cars to cap the power levels and keep the noise low and mpg high while still being drivable in a multitude of environments.

The Honda Civic Type R FN2 is one model where we felt we could make positive changes. The new Japspeed Dual Cone filter kit offers substantially better airflow than the restrictive stock panel filter. The Japspeed kit allows your engine to breathe easier, releasing extra horsepower and torque from the rev-happy V-Tec engine.
But how does it do this? It’s all down to clever design. The Dual Cone design with mesh reinforcement gives both lateral and central airflow, while a super-fine pattern of the mesh “straightens” the airflow and dramatically reduces the aerodynamic turbulence. That’s the science and function sorted out, on an athstetic level the beautiful induction kit will also dress-up your engine bay while giving your Honda Civic Type R FN2 a nice power boost, producing a deep and throaty induction roar as you pin the throttle and head for the redline. Take a look at the list of key features.

Features:

* Kit replaces the OE air filter, housing and rubber ducting.
* Increases power by 6-10 BHP and improves throttle response.
* Mandrel bent polished aluminium ducting 3 Inch (76mm) bore.
* High performance mesh reinforced dual cone filter.
* Offers longer service intervals than standard panel filters.
* This filter is fully washable and re-usable – we recommend using a K and N recharger filter care service kit to prolong the life of the filter.
* Ducting relocates dual cone filter behind the front bumper area to gain maximum cold air flow.
* Direct bolt-on replacement, can be easily fitted in minutes.
* No instructions supplied with the kit, professional mechanic install is recommend if you have no experience.
* Kit Includes polished aluminium ducting, air filter, and all necessary silicone hoses and clamps.

The test
Now all this information is good to hear, but what does it mean in the real world? We used a run-of-the-mill, daily driven and unmodified Type R as our guinea pig for the power test.

We took the test vehicle to John Clarkson Autos to strap the Civic Type R FN2 to their rolling road to see what happened. The rolling road in question was a Dastek one; ideal for giving accurate readings of what gain the kit achieves and to overlay them together so that direct comparisons can be made from the “before and after” runs.

We handed over the keys and placed all the rolling road operation in their hands. Once we had a base figure showing the cars output in a standard state, we fitted the dual cone filter kit and re-ran the car on the rollers. We are very happy with the results! The owner reported to us that the gains are noticeable when on the road, in the driver’s seat and that the engine seemed keener to rev. Take a look at the graph yourself.

Our experience of testing has shown us that some models and engines can fall short of the quoted factory power outputs, and in some cases, they make more! The Honda Civic Type R FN2 we used for this test does indeed seem to be a strong one! Pushing out 10bhp over standard, It goes to show that regular servicing does pay off! We were all happily suprised by this and duly made notes, using it as a start point to measure gains. We conducted the testing on the same day, using the same rollers and operator, doing all we could to ensure fair play for a fair test.

The end result? We recorded solid 10bhp and 8lbs.ft gains! The car is also producing it’s peak power 300rpm earlier too! We were understandably thrilled with this news, we put the gains seen down to the increased airflow from the cone and the careful thought that went into the pipe work, because it runs much smoother, aiding rapid airflow. This isn’t some nasty peak power gain where you lose out across the range just to gain some pub-figures though. As you can see, the power is improved throughout the whole rev-range, so there are no lazy flat spots or horrible unusable peaks; just a nice, usable proven power gain for a sensible price.
Fitting

Fitting will take around 2 hours due to its location behind the bumper. You can remove the front bumper for better access, or you could remove the wheel and wheel arch to gain access that way. For a neater fit, we trimmed approximately 5mm from the inner arch guard, this is not essential but we found the additional clearance made for a cleaner finished result. If you have any questions regarding fitment, our usual support and after sales customer service is available to you.

These are in stock and priced at £59.99 including shipping to UK mainland! For shipping costs Outside of Mainland UK, please ask for a quote.

To get your hands on these all you need to do is call us on 08450 212 312 to pay by debit card.
Or if you prefer you can send a PayPal payment to sales@japspeed.co.uk with a note attached to the payment providing us with your contact details, shipping address and telephone number.
Please include in your note which of our products you wish to order.

Team Japspeed join the party

In case you have been living in a cave for the past month, you can’t have failed to notice the much publicised build up for the 10th birthday of Japfest at Castle Combe in Wiltshire. It was a special day to celebrate what is arguably the biggest Japanese-based car show, with an average of 15,000 people attending, it is always a monster of an event, and often marked down as being the start of the show season for many.

Steve “Baggsy” Biagioni gives a wave as he leads Paul “Smokey” Smith out onto the Castle Combe circuit

With the 2012 event being a 10th birthday bonanza, the Japfest team laid on a host of special attractions to celebrate the occasion, it lured in a record number of visitors who were keen to soak up some sunshine and track action along the key spectator points.

Keen drift fans had their cameras at the ready to get some action pictures and film drift footage to re-live again at home

Inside the busy show area it was crammed with Jap fans who were out looking for bargains in the trader village and admiring the show cars that were on display on various tuner and club stands. The drift cars were especially popular as it presented a chance for the public to get up close to the cars which are often seen through a haze of tyre smoke.

You can’t argue that there was over 15,000 people at Castle Combe for Japfest

Japfest organisers invited Team Japspeed and various Maxxis British Drift Championship drivers to come down and hold a little on-track party of their own for the crowd to bring in this special birthday with a bang. The gang relished this chance and did exactly that!

No prizes for guessing who this is!

This year we sent down “Baggsy” in the Subaru and “Smokey” in the S15 to do some 1JZ-powered partying of their own!The lads made those Team Japspeed monochrome monsters dance, as they smoked up their Maxxis MA-Z1 drift rubber before the huge crowds that gathered on the corners. The twinning between Baggsy and Smokey around Quarry brought a few people up on their feet as they wanted to get a better view of the door to door driving.

Baggsy finishes off his Maxxis MA-Z1 tyres with a cheeky burnout as he leaves the track

Japfest organisers laid out three extended drift sessions for the BDC stars. When they first went out on track, the Team Japspeed duo did go a little mental, shredding the brand new Maxxis rubber to the canvas within around 3 laps! To do that to such high quality tyres speaks volumes about how hard they were pushing, any following cars had to battle through a thick fog of smoke left by the boys.

Smokey Smith leads the way around Quarry corner

This brought lots of attention and admirers over to the Team Japspeed stand in-between runs on track. Many fans were keen to know when the next round of the BDC is (Norfolk Arena “Night Fight” 1st and 2nd of June).

The infamous Japspeed Subaru always turns heads and gets attention, it’s easy to see why

Out on track again Baggsy and Smokey tuned into the same frequency on the Team radio, this allowed the pair to communicate with each other while driving, they wasn’t discussing the weather or football results though, they used the radio to great advantage; informing each other of the lines they were about to take in and out of the corners, it made for some seriously technical and beautifully executed drifts. Everyone loves a spot of twinning.

Team Japspeed at work, doing what they do best!

As the sun set and the track shut, everyone knew they’d been part of a special day, it showcased a sample of what the Maxxis British Drift Championship has to offer to a selection of people who’d never managed to get to an event. Team Japspeed did themselves proud and while the preparations are already underway for Round 2 in Norfolk, we’re also looking forward to Japfest 2 at Donington Park on July 8th. It’ll be a summer sensation!

Motorsport has always been the forefront of development in the car world. Striving for the ultimate in performance to gain an edge over rivals no matter how small; is what helps make winners out of contenders. Team Japspeed never sit still in the quest for Maxxis British Drift Championship glory. The winter saw a step up on the development programme with some Rallycross-inspired modification to both the 1JZ powered Subaru Impreza and the VH45DE TT equipped Nissan S15.

The theory behind this radical cooling system overhaul was for three reasons; to gain a better weight distribution, this will aid balance and on-the-limit handling. In an ideal world, a car should have 50/50 weight distribution to give the perfect mix of nimble road holding and stability. Besides handling, the relocation was intended to reduce the power-sapping heat soak from the engine bay. Parking on a start line with a hot engine running often saw temperatures rise. A final bonus reason besides these performance gains is that it frees up space under the bonnet to work. Making quick repairs easier for the mechanics to complete when under pressure at rounds of the Maxxis British Drift Championship. Everything for this radical swap-around was done in-house by Team Japspeed’s development crew. The Subaru and S15 both share similarities and the same principles, but with some subtle differences between the two. Here’s a quick walk through on how we did it.

The first step is a scary one. After some marking out, the floor pan was chopped to accommodate the huge cooling system. No going back now!

Things progressed with lots of measuring, offering the radiator into place and making a dummy radiator box out of cardboard, this is the easiest medium to use to make templates from. Both the S15 and Subaru run huge modified Supra Mk4 alloy radiators that are from the Japspeed product catalogue.

With the positioning of the radiator sorted out, it was time to fabricate the box out of alloy.

The air has to come in from somewhere and in this application, the rear doors were chopped about to start working out the route for all that lovely cool air.

After the route was decided and the initial vents cut in, the door panel was sealed on so that none of that lovely cool air was going to waste and pointlessly wafting around the car interior.

To channel all of this air into the car, it needed some custom scoops. It was a time consuming process, but worthwhile for the end result.

The scoops were then painstakingly crafted into the doors, things are really starting to take shape now!

The radiator box was extended internally and hooked up with cold air feeds to maximise the air into the box.

The Supra radiator is huge; nothing like a bit of over kill in motorsport, so the system was further beefed up with a large alloy reservoir/header tank. The Subaru and S15 now run between 15-18 litres in the system! Helping things circulate is a powerful electric water pump.

To ensure the best possible cooling; a pair of 14″ Kenlowe dual speed fans are fitted to draw cool air in and expel it out of the rear. The fans are controlled by the ECU for pinpoint accuracy.

To further increase the cooling potential, a Subaru bonnet vent was crafted into the roof to ram even more cold air into the radiator box.

Underneath the roof scoop the air is channelled down two additional feeds.

Which in turn are connected to the air box that is located where the rear bench once was.

The final modification was to cut imposing vents into the rear boot lid. This lets any excess hot air escape to make things as efficient as possible.

With all the design aspects finalised, the side scoops were given a finishing touch and covered in the recognisable Team Japspeed livery.

Did it work? Yes! A measurable success! Previously the car would often hit 110-112c on track, now with the radiator relocation it struggles to hit 90c. A solid 20c drop in temperature! Plus less heat soak in the engine bay and more space to work. Not forgetting the weight distribution to aid handling. Literally there’s no cooler modification than a radiator in the boot!

It’s been a long hard winter for Team Japspeed in the run up to the start of the BDC season. New rear-mounted cooling systems and Quaife transmission developments have been high on the agenda. The first round of The Maxxis British Drift Championship started with a bang at Teesside Autodrome on 21st and 22nd of April.

The series itself has had some changes in the quest for it to remain the number one drifting contest in the UK, these changes have gone down well with both drivers and fans alike. The BDC is drawing in pools of talent from across the continent with Europe’s top drivers being desperate to join to compete for the honours.

A full grid of 96 cars mean that every class is packed to capacity, so there’s no shortage of action and competition is fierce! Team Japspeed started their weekend with a swift reminder of how tough the competition has become, both Shane Lynch and Steve “Baggsy” Biagioni were unable to qualify. The harsh and continually changing weather of Teesside was causing several upsets within the field and proved how high the standards are for 2012.

The weather was changing wildly from torrential rain, hailstones and when the rain finally stopped you had mixed conditions of dry sections merging into deep standing water. It placed even more pressure on drivers, finding that perfect balance and consistency wasn’t an easy task.

While both Shane and Baggsy were nursing slightly wounded pride from the shock news, they took the judges decision on the chin and settled in for a weekend of supporting the remaining Team Japspeed Super Pro drivers, Paul “Smokey” Smith and Shane “The Dark Horse” O’ Sullivan.

A good nights sleep was essential on Saturday night because everyone needed to have to have their wits about them to take on the tricky Teesside track on Sunday. Just when Baggsy thought he could relax, he was told that he was being brought back into the final 16 to compete! Reeling from this shock revelation, he was informed that this was becuase of the unfortunate news that Brendan Stone had an oil pump failure. It was a devastating blow for Brendan after traveling all the way from Ireland to compete. This unfortunate dropout from the final 16 allowed everyone to move up a place and it brought Baggsy into play.

The battles on the run towards the final were some of the closest we’ve seen, the new judging panel had some tough decisions to make, many duels were so close that the judges had to ask competitors to run again; such was the high standard and incredible skill displayed from the drivers.

An in-house battle was on the cards in the later stages as Shane O’Sullivan was drawn against Baggsy, the team mate banter had to be put to one side while the duo went door-to-door with each other. Shane quietly claimed his victory and moved on to face Steve Moore. Meanwhile, if that wasn’t enough, Baggsy was told he was going to have to play part in another Japspeed battle, this time it was against Smokey Smith to decide 3rd and 4th place honors. You never know what will happen next in the BDC! Baggsy just nipped the victory and got himself the pride-swelling 3rd place podium finish.

Next was the Super Pro Final, Shane pulled a blinding performance against Steve Moore for a crowd pleasing face-off, it was intense and so close that the judges required a “OMT”, One More Time, to separate the two stars. This weekend showed just why he earned the nickname of “The Dark Horse in his Irish ProDrift days.

It was a true action packed bonanza all weekend, with some true world-class driving on display. Team Japspeed’s rollercoaster of emotion was rewarded with one of their best results in three years, boasting , 1st, 3rd and 4th place! Still dizzy from this success the Team are now setting their focus firmly onto The Norfolk Arena for the “Night Fight” held on 1st and 2nd of June. We hope you’ll be there to take in all the action of the Maxxis British Drift Championship, and to cheer us on!

Earlier in the year Team Japspeed and Monster Energy Drinks proudly announced their collaboration for the upcoming 2012 drift season with the Japspeed/Monster Energy Nissan S15 piloted by Ireland’s Shane O’Sullivan. With the 2012 season drawing ever closer Japspeed have once again teamed up with Monster Energy to create a second Monster-livered drift machine but this time it’s an altogether different beast.

Competing in the 2012 season of the British Drift Championship and powered by an impressive V8 VH45DETT which not only produces around 600BHP but also generates 600LB/FT of torque the new Japspeed/Monster S15 is definately a unique creation…..particularly as it is driven and drifted by none other than Boyzone’s Shane Lynch.

“This is a massive step forward for the sport of drifting; to have such a major global brand supporting the 2012 season” explains Team Japspeed driver Shane.

With an eventful 2011 season behind him – including taking the top qualifier crown at the season finale, and with full support from Team Japspeed and Monster Energy; Shane is set to be a serious contender in the 2012 season!

Make sure you get down to the first round of the 2012 Maxxis British Drift Championship over at Teesside Autodrome on the 21st-22nd April to see what Shane and this incredible machine can do.

Entries to the championship are at record levels with drivers from across Europe registering their intention to take part – France, Holland, Italy, Belgium, Portugal and Ireland to name a few!

Each event in 2012 will take place over a minimum of two days. This will allow for practice and qualifying on day one and day two will be used for the all-important finals. For the first time in the championship’s history there is set to be a minimum of a top 16 final in each of the three classes. Please see below for the details of each round of the 2012 Maxxis Tyres British Drift Championship.

Round 1 – Run the Gauntlet
Teesside Autodrome, Middlesborough
21st April – 22nd April 2012

Following the return of drifting to Teesside in 2011, we return to the starting point of the BDC back in 2008. This venue offers the perfect mix of fast flowing corners mixed with tight technical sections to test drivers to the max.]

Round 2 – Night Fight
Norfolk Arena, Kings Lynn
1st June – 2nd June 2012

We return to the venue which gives us the closest driving from any event on the calendar. With the finals run under the floodlights this is a spectacle not to be missed!

Round 3 – Return to the Thunderdrome
Teesside Autodrome, Middlesborough
29th June – 1st July 2012

We return to Teesside for the second time due to the fantastic benefits the venue offers. However the track layout will be altered to offer a totally different challenge to the drivers.

A change to the first announcement to incorporate the annual Team Triple Drift Event. For the first time in the BDC’s history we will see the team event at the birth place of the BDC – Teesside. With more teams than ever registering to take part this will be an event that simply can not be missed.

Round 4 – King of the Hill
Lydden Hil, nr Canterbury, Kent
11th August – 12th August 2012

We head to the far south east of the UK and return to the undulating track of Lydden Hill. The dops and falls of this track means the drivers must find the perfect mix of balance and bravery to conquer The Hill.

Round 5 – Battle of Britain
Silverstone, Northants
2nd September

The home of British Motorsport will be the host for round 5 for the Super Professional Class. This will be the main attraction of the UK’s largest car show Trax. Entry speed of 100mph are the norm and backwards entries will get the 15,000 strong crowd wanting more!

Round 6 – Judgement Day
Knockhill Circuit, Fife, Scotland
29th September – 30th September 2012

We head north of the border into Scotland for judgement day. We have saved the driver’s favourite track until last. The first corner is not only fast but the apex is blind! Bravery, skill and perfect judgement are all required to get it right! Then its time to slow the cars down for the tricky right hander which has seen many visits to the gravel that awaits.

“We have drivers from across Europe registering to take part in the championship in 2012, this show the whole BDC team will keep pushing the sport forward in the right direction.”
