Mallory Park 29th July – “Classic Thunder” Championship
For rounds 5 & 6 of the BARC Classic Thunder Championship, the drivers moved to Mallory Park in Leicestershire. For the first time this year, Vaughan Fletcher and his “Scoobyclinic” prepared Subaru Impreza return to the series where he won his class and finished 3rd overall in 2011. Facing stiff opposition from cars with nearly double the horsepower, two tough races lay ahead.
Qualifying netted a comfortable 5th place overall and 3rd in class behind this season’s front running race winners.
Race one witnessed the inevitable as the front two rows blasted out of the gate, however it was far from over for the “VF-Racing” Subaru. Vaughan battled with Paul Dobson in his “Lightning McQueen” RX7 and after passing him and moving up a place, the Sunbeam Talbot of Mallory Park supremeo Joss Ronchetti. With a battle down to the wire, the pair crossed the line less than half a second apart.
Race two began in much the same way as race 1, but from the off Fletcher was determined to not let Ronchetti take the chequered flag ahead of him. With the bit firmly between his teeth, the Chesterfield based driver piloted the Impreza with precision and didn’t put a wheel wrong throughout the race as he closed up on the lead pack.
Unfortunately a 3 car accident caused the race to be red flagged, denying Vaughan any further chance of claiming another position. The team will be out at OultonParkon the 18th August for the next two rounds of the BRSCC Eurosaloon Championship.
