Team Japspeed

Sunday saw Team Japspeed heading to the historic Silverstone circuit for Round 5 of the Maxxis British Drift Championship. The round was being run alongside Trax, the biggest show on the British modified car scene calendar and one that sees tens of thousands descend on the Home of British Motorsport.

With so many spectators in attendance, the event was the perfect platform with which to display drifting to those that may not be that familiar with the sport. We made a lot of new fans by the end of the day and it was great to be able to show so many members of the public around the Team Japspeed cars and to allow them to meet and greet the drivers throughout the event.

Practice kicked off on Sunday morning and, with Shane Lynch, Shane O’Sullivan, Danny Eyles and Paul Smith all being familiar with the Silverstone circuit, it didn’t take them long to get comfortable.

Shane Lynch would be driving our 2JZ Lexus IS200 at the event due to our V8 S15 encountering some technical difficulties in the days prior to Trax. Shane loved the car right from the off, with a few minor tweaks to the KW coilovers being all that was necessary to leave Shane feeling full of confidence in the Lexus prior to qualifying.

Qualifying was a huge success for the team, with all four drivers securing a spot in the Top 16 battles. Championship favourite Shane O’Sullivan bagged the top qualifying spot with Danny not far behind in fourth while Shane and Paul grabbed eighth and ninth, respectively.

With Team Japspeed drivers representing a quarter of the Top 16 the odds were definitely stacked in our favor for a good result.

The Top 16 battles saw Shane L and Paul drawn against each other. Both drivers fought extremely hard and their experience of drifting together was clear for all to see, with Shane taking the win.

Sully and Danny also won their respective Top 16 battles, with Sully knocking out Dan Chapman and Danny defeating Paul Cheshire.

The Top 8 saw the two Shanes drawn against each other in a Japspeed showdown. Both pushed as hard as they could but it was Sully that would emerge the victor after two very closely fought affairs. Danny saw off the attentions of Marc Huxley in order to continue on his path to the final.

Unfortunately for Sully and Danny they were unable to come out on top in their Top 4 battles, leaving the pair of them to fight it out for third place and the final spot on the podium.

The two fought hard, maybe too hard in Danny’s case as he sent the Japspeed Subaru off track and onto the grass, gifting the win to Sully.

Qualifying first and finishing third provided Sully with a huge haul of points that now places him 35 points clear at the top of the Super Pro championship. With no other driver capable of scoring that many points with one round remaining, Shane O’Sullivan has done enough to secure the 2014 Maxxis BDC championship title. We can’t wait for the official announcement and subsequent celebrations at the final round that takes place at Anglesey on the 20th & 21st September!
