For the final two rounds of the BRSCC “Euro Saloon” Championship, (and the final event of 2013) the team made the short trup from their Chesterfield base to Donington Park Circuit in the neighbouring county of Leicestershire.
Using the ScoobyClinic prepared Subaru’s 4WD to great effect, qualifying netted a very respectable 4th place in treacherous conditions.
On pole was the Evo 9 of Gary Prebble, with Dave Cockell and his Escort Cosworth in 2nd place and alongside Vaughan was Andy Robinson in his thundering Ford Falcon.
From the rolling start, and charging hard Prebble held his position, but cold tyres unsettled the Evo on the first corner where he promptly fell off the track and back to sixth place.
As a result Vaughan moved up to 3rd behind Robinson and Cockell and proceeded to pull out a lead over those chasing.
All was going well until 4 laps in, when coming down the pit straight all drive in 5ht gear was lost. The resulting speed differential meant he was unable to keep those behind him at bay and the car was retired.
When all looked lost and all avenues were exhausted, in a show of extreme generosity, fellow Subaru racer Danny Precious offered the keys to his Impreza in order for Vaughan to compete in race 2.
Having never driven Danny’s Subaru before, it would be a test to see what results could be achieved when starting in dead last. By the first corner Vaughan had taken 6 places, but the unfamiliar gear ratios in the 6 speed gearbox meant the car bogged down on the exit, which dropped him to the back of the pack again.
Back on the attack and by the end of lap 1, Vaughan was up to 12th from a starting position of 23rd!
An incident between Robinson and Cockell brought out the safety car for 3 laps, leaving only 1 lap to race to the flag.
On the restart Vaughan was able to better his position further still and finished in 10th place, a fantastic effort to end the day on and testament to the skill of the driver.
As the season has now come to a close, it’s time to send a message of thanks to all our sponsors, supporters and friends for their continued involvement. Here’s to 2013!
